Position Highlights

The University of Arizona seeks to fill up to four (4) attorney positions in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). Depending on prior work experience, the selected candidates will be positioned as either an Assistant General Counsel or Associate General Counsel, focusing on the following areas:

Higher education-related international matters
Distance and online higher education matters
Transactional matters
Intellectual property matters

Successful candidates also may have responsibilities in a diverse range of additional practice areas common to higher education institutions, such as student life and academics, compliance, litigation strategy and oversight, labor and employment, governance, public procurement, public records, privacy, civil rights, research, accreditation, risk management, law enforcement, real estate, public finance, administrative law, threat assessment and student health and safety, hearings, policy and procedure development, information technology, legislative, and constitutional matters.

OGC represents and advises the University of Arizona and the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) on sophisticated legal matters and complex issues. Duties & Responsibilities

International: Higher education international matters, including affiliation and other international agreements, international labor and employment issues, corporate structures and entity formation, privacy and other governmental approvals and regulatory compliance, intellectual property, international student recruitment, and international program design and development

Distance and Online Higher Education: Accreditation matters, State and Federal governmental approvals and regulatory compliance, privacy and other compliance matters, affiliation and other collaboration agreements, licensure requirements, and general transactional matters

Transactional: Drafting and reviewing various contracts, licenses, and agreements, including governmental procurement agreements, and general transactional matters including real estate, construction, corporate law, and governance

Intellectual Property: U.S. and foreign patent, trademark, and copyright matters, including prosecution, registration, licensing, and disclosure matter; commercialization of intellectual property, conflict of interest and compliance, drafting and reviewing various contracts, licenses, and agreements

Expectations

Work closely with the other attorneys and the support team in OGC – as well as University administrators, faculty, and staff – and interact with outside counsel, other governmental offices, University-affiliated organizations, and ABOR
Develop and foster strong relationships with clients and outside counsel to support strong connections with OGC
Assist in developing and providing training and educational programs for administrators, faculty, staff, and other colleagues
Contribute to the collaborative planning and execution of the University’s strategic priorities
Engage in continuous education and improvement in legal practice and knowledge through professional development, and attend and participate as a presenter at conferences and workshops as appropriate and as requested
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
Admitted to practice law in the State of Arizona, in good standing, or be eligible and admitted to practice law in the State of Arizona within one year of employment
A minimum of three years of substantial and progressively responsible legal experience practicing law

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to experience in the areas of practice for the respective positions, preferred qualifications for all positions include the following:

Experience providing legal service and counsel to research institutions, colleges, or universities or practicing law in a higher education environment
Experience and knowledge of Arizona laws, rules, and regulations, including public procurement, public records, and public employment in Arizona

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University’s campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
