Position: Intellectual Property (IP) Patent Paralegal
Location: Chicago, IL
Employment Type: Full-Time (Hybrid, 4 days in the office and 1 day remote. The firm offers more flexibility after approximately 6 months)
Salary Range: $90,000 - $120,000

Position Summary:
A leading law firm is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Patent Paralegal to provide legal support on patent-related matters. This role involves gathering preliminary technical information for patent assessments, monitoring deadlines for domestic and international patent activities, and handling routine tasks to maintain and protect patent portfolios. Additional responsibilities include docketing U.S. and foreign patent matters, overseeing patents and license agreements, and assisting with contested patent issues.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provide legal support for patent-related tasks, including technical information gathering for assessments.
- Monitor deadlines for U.S. and international patent activities and ensure compliance.
- Handle routine actions related to the maintenance and protection of patents.
- Assist in docketing for U.S. and foreign patent matters, including patents, license agreements, and contested issues.
Experience & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree and Paralegal certification preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of patent experience required.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. and foreign patent processes, including prosecution, maintenance, and renewals.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and patent-related software tools (e.g., Innovation, PATTSY, Lexis/Nexis).
- Ability to handle confidential information discreetly, work independently, and produce accurate work with minimal supervision.
- Exceptional organizational skills, multitasking abilities, and adaptability to work under pressure.
- Strong attention to detail, follow-up, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills.
- Willingness to adopt new research tools and technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate domestic and international filings with the USPTO and foreign legal entities.
- Maintain docket systems to track deadlines for filings, renewals, oppositions, PCT requirements, and annuity payments.
- Prepare and file patent-related documents with the USPTO and foreign counsel.
- Draft and record patent assignments.
- Prepare client correspondence and patent status reports for attorneys and clients.
- Review and address correspondence from foreign associates.
- Manage legalizations, certifications, and notarizations as required.
- Conduct research on national and international patent rights, including USPTO records, industry databases, and legal sources.
