Position Overview
Patent Agents at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner are responsible for managing valuable patent assets and assessing patent risk for our clients. Patent Agents work under the supervision and guidance of partners in the firm's Intellectual Property section and perform a variety of patent-related activities, and practice in the area of patent prosecution.
This position is open to applicants in Washington, D.C.
Responsibilities
- Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications on behalf of clients
- Focus on patent filings
- Draft responses to rejection of a patent application for an invention from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other worldwide Patent Offices
- Work with clients on innovative and cutting-edge technologies to procure patent protection and build IP portfolios

- Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with lawyers, firm management, staff and clients one-on-one both verbally and through written correspondence, surveys, memos, etc.
- Proven project management, organizational, and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects and to meet deadlines
- Ability to work well under pressure with flexibility and adaptability to changing work priorities, work flow and work assignments
- Ability to work flexible schedule to accommodate projects as needed, including working evenings or a weekend on occasion
- Ability to diplomatically provide answers, pushback or to question those in authority for greater clarity or more information, if needed
- Proven ability to think creatively, using good judgment and decision-making capabilities
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but may serve as a coach for other positions.
Travel
Minimal travel required for this role.
Education/Experience/Certifications
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in patent prosecution
- Industry experience (or equivalent) in the field of battery technology, battery chemistry and lithium-ion batteries is strongly preferred
- Registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Pursuant to the Washington D.C. pay transparency laws, BCLP is posting a reasonable estimate of a compensation range for this position. At the time of posting, the estimated Washington D.C. range is $109,408.80 to $170,951.25. Actual compensation will be influenced by various factors, including but not limited to the level of relevant experience, skill sets, training, licensure and certifications, internal equity, market data, and other job-related factors permitted by law. The range is based on a full-time work schedule. Additional compensation may include an annual discretionary bonus.
