This is an on-site and full-time position in Waltham, MA. The Team
Alloy’s Legal team supports all legal work for Alloy’s various business units, including our in-house venture studio, 82VS, and its related entities. Alloy’s legal work is predominantly handled internally, with the assistance from outside counsel as needed from time-to-time. Alloy’s legal team has direct interaction with every level of Alloy, from entry level bench scientist to the executive suite.
The Role
Our Legal team is looking for an organized, self-starting, and motivated individual to join the team at our offices in Athens, Georgia. The position will report directly to the Head of Legal, based in Boston, MA, and on-site with daily interaction with the CEO of our Athens, GA location. The individual must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact comfortably with all levels of Alloy and external parties. Core duties and responsibilities will revolve around the management and prosecution of Alloy’s (and its subsidiaries’) intellectual property portfolio.
Principal Responsibilities
- Establish and manage, in close collaboration with senior management, a robust invention disclosure and evaluation program
- Work closely with the scientific teams at each Alloy site to harvest and evaluate potential inventions
- Perform landscape and prior art searches, render preliminary patentability opinions
- Assist internal stakeholders with questions regarding freedom to operate and prior art
- Provide guidance to internal stakeholder on patentability, patent strategy, and design-around options
- Monitor patent activities and provide guidance on potential infringement and invalidity issues
- Develop and implement strategies to build a strong, defensible patent portfolio aligned with the company's business goals
- Conduct intellectual property diligence
- Manage and work closely with outside patent counsel to prepare, prosecute, and manage Alloy’s intellectual property portfolio
- Review office actions and assist in the preparation of responses to the same
- Manage docketing, reporting, and budgeting for Alloy’s intellectual property portfolio
- Filing and managing company records; maintaining the document management system
Required Qualifications And Skills
- M.S./Ph.D. in a technical field relating to antibody discovery and engineering and/or genetic medicines. Candidates with focus in immunology will receive preference
- 5-7 years of relevant experience in a law firm setting or equivalent in-house experience at a pharmaceutical or biotech company
- Experience reviewing and evaluating invention disclosures and translating them into patent applications
- Active United States Patent & Trademark Office Registration. Candidates with significant experience before the United States Patent & Trademark Office with receive preference
- Assist in negotiations for the licensing, acquisitions, and/or commercialization of Alloy’s intellectual property efforts as necessary. Experience with various commercial contracts applicable to the biotech industry and their interaction with intellectual property is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and follow through on projects to completion
- Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal issues to non-attorneys
- Strong problem solving and decision-making skills while balancing the risk profile of the company
- Agility in a fast-paced start up environment
