Job Description
Vertiv is hiring a Global Patent Agent who will be a key member of the Global Patent Committee. This role will play a crucial part in bridging the legal and engineering teams to protect Vertiv's intellectual property. The primary responsibility is to help transform employee ideas into valuable patents. This includes participating in the creation, management, and oversight of company-wide patent policies, procedures, and processes, as well as addressing patent-related matters in North America and within specific Business Units.
This position will be located at our Corporate HQ's office in Westerville, Ohio.
Responsibilities
- Conduct and analyze patentability, product clearance, and validity searches for new product designs and modifications of existing products.
- Plan, administer, and maintain IP training and incentive/recognition programs to encourage a culture of innovation at Vertiv.
- Work directly with inventors to harvest and develop ideas into viable invention disclosures.
- Draft, prepare and file patent applications with USPTO and coordinate with outside counsel regarding foreign filings.
- Review and draft responses to office actions for both domestic and foreign filings.
- P rovide guidance and instructions to outside counsel on prosecution, international filing decisions, continuations, abandonments, etc.
- Conduct research in the enforcement and defense of all patent-related litigation.
- Oversee budgets and track spending for patent-related matters, including annuity and law firm payments.
- Prepare reports of patent-related metrics/KPIs.
Qualifications
- Experience: Preferred candidates will have at least 2 years of full-time claim drafting and patent prosecution experience with a reputable law firm or company. Familiarity with the procedures in the MPEP (Manual of Patent Examining Procedures) and basic patent filing regulations in foreign countries is essential.
- Education: A minimum of a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics is required; an MS or Ph.D. is highly valued. Candidates with other engineering disciplines will also be considered.
- Licensing: A USPTO license (for patent agents or patent attorneys) is preferred.
Skills
- Strong interpersonal skills suitable for substantial client interaction
- Excellent project management, organizational, and analytical abilities
- Detail-oriented with proficiency in MS Office and various patent searching platforms, such as IP.com or Questel
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in reviewing, analyzing, and summarizing patent scopes, with the capability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to diverse stakeholders.
