A D.C. Government Agency is seeking a Temporary Paralegal Specialist for a contract assignment. The period of performance is flexible, the hours for this temporary position will be in-person 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday - Friday. Work will take place near the National Mall in Washington, DC.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide paralegal support in matters related to copyright research and filings, and trademark registration, maintenance, and use of Smithsonian trademarks, service marks and certification marks.
- Search copyright registrations with the Library of Congress and research of Smithsonian collection files to evaluate copyright status; prepare written results of searches; conduct trademark searches with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to determine that no similar mark is in use, prepare trademark applications, coordinate with the Smithsonian unit/office seeking trademark protection to obtain all necessary materials to support, complete and file the application.
- Draft and file responses to trademark office notices, monitor pending actual use and intent-to-use applications and monitors publication of new marks; maintain the Smithsonian’s trademark print and electronic trademark files and keep track of filing deadlines to ensure timely filing of post registration affidavits and renewal applications to avoid abandonment of the marks.
- Engage in similar research, registration and application efforts in foreign jurisdictions should the Smithsonian seek trademark registrations in other jurisdictions; draft cease and desist letters in response to unauthorized use of Smithsonian intellectual property; track the status of Smithsonian patent applications and relevant deadlines; and engage in other research and filing obligations associated with the Smithsonian’s efforts to protect its intellectual property.
- Provides paralegal support to attorneys in representing the Smithsonian in a wide range of transactional legal matters to include organize, compile, and maintain documents and files related to, among other transactional matters, contracts, grants, gifts, bequests, foreign transactions and operations, and other non-litigation matters; prepare summaries and reports; conduct relevant legal research using electronic and printed resources; cite-check, and correct citations and grammar in legal correspondence.
- Provide paralegal support in matters related to the Smithsonian’s tax status. Within this context, the individual in this position may be asked to respond to requests from various SI units and the Office of Finance and Accounting for information and documentation concerning the Smithsonian’s tax and regulatory status; prepare applications including supporting documentations for submission to domestic and foreign tax and regulatory authorities; prepare applications for submission to the IRS for U.S. residency certification letters; prepare applications for submission to state revenue offices to obtain state sales tax exemption status and certificates for the Smithsonian; research applicable foreign tax treaties relevant to Smithsonian transactions; create and maintain electronic and paper files related to tax and regulatory matters.
Job Requirements:
- The paralegal should have least two years’ experience working in a law office as a paralegal, and preferably working for multiple attorneys.
- The paralegal should possess a bachelor’s degree. A paralegal certificate is preferred but not required.
- Work is primary sedentary and requires the proficient use of a computer and standard office equipment and software.
- Work is generally performed in an office setting.
