Our client, a prestigious national law firm ranked in the AmLaw 50, is in search of a patent associate with over 3 years of experience in patent counseling. They should have expertise in preparing and prosecuting patents. The role will be a part of the esteemed Chemical, Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Practice Group within the firm's national Intellectual Property Department. The candidate will be based in one of the following locations: Boston, Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee, New York, San Diego, Silicon Valley, or Washington DC. However, alternative office locations within the Foley network may be considered based on business need and the candidate's experience.
About the Candidate:
- The candidate should possess a PhD in the biological sciences, such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Genetics, or a related field.
- They should be registered with the USPTO.
- Experience in drafting and prosecuting both domestic and international patent applications is required.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in drafting patent opinions, especially in the biotechnology or related technological field.
- Strong legal writing and research skills, as well as excellent written and oral communication abilities, are crucial.
- A proactive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively are essential.
- Candidates must have top academic qualifications and relevant experience in a law firm.
Main Responsibilities:
- Preparing and prosecuting patent applications both domestically and internationally.
- Providing patent opinions specifically in the field of biotechnology or related technologies.
- Working alongside inventors and attorneys to prepare and prosecute patent applications in emerging technology fields.
- Drafting comprehensive patent applications and negotiating the scope of patent rights with the Patent Office.
- Preparing reports and supporting documentation for patent portfolio management.
- Collaborating with a team of experienced attorneys and paralegals in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Note for Applicants in California: In accordance with the CA Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act, the expected salary range for this position is between $150,000 - $230,000. Final pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
Note for Applicants in New York: In line with the New York City Human Rights Law, the expected salary range for this position is $240,000 - $310,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors under the law.
Note for Applicants in Washington DC: According to the Washington DC Pay Transparency Law, the expected salary range for this position in Washington DC is between $150,000 - $230,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
