Compensation & Benefits:
The current salary range for entry-level technical consultants is $60,000 - $75,000, depending on education and relevant experience.
Technical consultants or patent agents with 3 or more years of experience have opportunities to earn percentage-based compensation in addition to the base salary. Experienced technical consultants/patent agents who maintain a pace of 1600+ billable hours may earn $75,000 - $150,000+ in total annual compensation.

Overview of Position:
This full-time position is a great opportunity for a scientist or engineer to be part of a growing intellectual property law firm. The Technical Consultant role involves working with attorneys to develop patents that protect our clients’ innovations. Both entry level and lateral candidates are welcome to apply. Training occurs on the job. Applicants with degrees in engineering, computer science, physics, and chemistry are encouraged to apply.
We will consider qualified candidates who prefer to work in a fully remote capacity. However, we will give preference to candidates who are willing to work in our firm’s Portland, OR office location. Currently, we ask our firm's Portland-area employees to work in the office once a week on mandatory in-office Wednesdays.
Responsibilities:
· Assist attorneys in understanding technical aspects of an invention
· Perform searching to evaluate the novelty of an invention
· Assist attorneys to draft patent applications, including a textual description and drawings illustrating the invention
· Assist attorneys in responding to examination reports from patent offices around the world
· Successfully manage a workload of multiple projects
· After the training period, work toward meeting an annual target of 1600 billable hours
Qualifications & Skills:
· Qualified candidates must have an undergraduate engineering or science degree (industry experience and advanced degrees are appreciated, but not required)
· Must be detail-oriented and possess superior organization skills
· Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining high quality work
· Must demonstrate excellent writing skills and verbal communication skills in English
· Language ability in Japanese or Mandarin Chinese would be an appreciated skill that would help us serve our overseas clients, but it is not required
· Prior experience is appreciated, but not required, as comprehensive on-the-job training is provided
· Registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is appreciated, but not required
· Must be eligible to work on United States export-controlled matters, as this position includes some work on such matters
