About the Office
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia has four offices which are located in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News. Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) are assigned to each of these offices to prosecute criminal cases and litigate civil cases. The district consists of more than 19,000 square miles, has a population of over six million, and includes numerous federal agencies (including the Defense Department and the CIA), military installations, and major airports. The Office has over 100 criminal AUSAs who handle a wide variety of complex cases, including drug trafficking and money-laundering crimes, terrorism-related offenses, firearms and other violent crime offenses, cybercrimes, environmental crimes, and a variety of fraud and white-collar offenses.

Job Description
An appointment with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers unique and challenging experiences
for the highly motivated attorneys an opportunity to work on their own caseload and handle their own trials. In the Civil Division, Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) represent the United States’ interests in trial and appellate courts in a wide variety of federal and state litigation, including bankruptcy, civil rights, commercial, constitutional, employment, environmental, federal programs, fraud, immigration, medical malpractice, patent, prisoner, Social Security, summons enforcement, tax, and general tort cases.
The attorney selected for this position will be assigned to the Civil Division in the Alexandria, Richmond, or Norfolk Division and will focus on defending the United States’ interests in civil cases and matters involving employment law, tort law, immigration law, constitutional law, the Administrative Procedure Act, and the Freedom of Information Act, among others.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Qualifications
Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), have at least one-year post-JD legal or other relevant experience, and possess superior oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment and function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment. Please include in your cover letter whether you prefer to work in the Alexandria, Richmond, or Norfolk Division.
Preferred qualifications: Federal litigation experience, a federal judicial clerkship, and/or experience with health care fraud or procurement fraud cases is desired.
United States citizenship is required.

Salary
Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay for these positions will be $62,107 to $162,447, plus locality pay.
